Jio GigaFiber is Reliance’s latest gamble for the Indian telecom sector. The broadband offering operates on a platform that uses FTTH connectivity and as such promises fast internet connection but at competitive rates.
For now, Jio GigaFiber is not available commercially and has been extended to select users on a preview basis. Its preview plan which is being extended free of cost is available in cities like Mumbai, Delhi-NCR, Ahmedabad, Jamnagar, Surat, and Vadodara, etc — with plans to expand the service to over 1000 cities in the coming months.
We’ve tried the Jio GigaFiber connection for a few months now. Here’s are five things you can expect from it.
Fast download and upload speeds
Reliance Jio GigaFiber during the preview offer promises fast download and upload speeds. As per Jio, the broadband service offers download speeds of up to 100 Mbps. However, there’s a catch. The close to 100 Mbps speed is only available if you’re using the connection via an ethernet cable or connected to the Jio GigaHub over the 5ghz Wi-Fi channel — using a supported device. Over the 2.4Ghz channel, the GigaHub can only transmit data up to a speed of 50 Mbps.
Uploads speeds over both the channels are pretty much the same and hover around the 100 or 50 Mbps Mbps mark.
Another great thing about Jio GigaFiber is that there is very less downtime. During our over three months using the connection in Delhi-NCR, we’ve only encountered downtime of around5-6 hours over a technical failure.
Even in such cases, reaching out to the customer support is quite easy and resolution of the issue proved to be quite prompt.
Low ping for gaming
Because of the platform using state of the art infrastructure, Jio also provides great connectivity to servers within and outside the country.
This especially comes in handy when files being downloaded are hosted on remote services or playing games online. Jio GigaFiber also offers low pings to servers which is essential for gaming.
As we’ve mentioned above, the service of Jio GigaFiber is quite good. Although we haven’t faced too many problems and have only needed support once during our time with it, the experience even then was quite good, to say the least.
Customer support was easy to reach over the phone and once there helped solve our issue to satisfaction. Jio GigaFiber also allows users to raise complaints through the MyJio app.
Although still under planning, for users thinking about getting a Jio Gigafiber connection an important thing to consider is that Jio’s broadband service in the future will also bring with it a suite of Jio smart-home services and devices that could be used to turn your home smart in a matter of minutes.
Reliance Jio’s CEO Mukesh Ambani also revealed in the past that in the future, the company plans to bring Jio SmartHome Accessories suite which will include an audio-video dongle, smart speaker, Wi-Fi extender, smart plug and security products. The company also plans to launch smoke sensors, smart video doorbells as well as other security accessories for homes under this line-up.
