At least 26 people were killed and 12 others injured when a truck they were travelling on fell off a bridge and fell into a drain near the Ranghola village of Bhavnagar district on the state highway in Gujarat on Tuesday morning. Most of the victims consisted of women and children.
A marriage party of around 50-60 people were reportedly travelling in the truck which was going from the Anida village of Palitana taluka in Bhavnagar to the Tatam village in Gadhda taluka of nearby Botad district before it fell off a bridge near Ranghola.
“At least 26 persons have been confirmed dead so far. While 25 of them died on the spot, one of the injured succumbed died on way to hospital. We do not know as yet the exact number of injured but according to primary information, more than 50 persons were travelling in the truck,” superintendent of police of Bhavnagar district, PL Mal said to The Indian Express.
According to initial investigations, the driver lost control of the truck due to drowsiness, resulting in the truck swerving off the bridge and falling 8 metres onto a dry riverbed.
District collector of Bhavnagar Harshad Patel said that the injured had been taken to nearby hospitals in Timbi village and Bhavnagar city.
